Good for You!

California Rideshare Week

Is Coming October 3 – 7

California Rideshare Week is a statewide marketing campaign designed to educate commuters on the many benefits of ridesharing. Here in Orange County, you can discover these benefits carpooling, vanpooling, riding the train or bus, telecommuting, riding your bike or even walking during the week of October 3-7, 2005.

What are the benefits you ask? Check these out. Any form of ridesharing is less expensive than driving alone…Good for You! Ridesharing means less or no traffic and shorter commute times…Good for You! It’s a fact, you’ll be less stressed and more productive…Good for You! And if all this isn’t enough, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is offering a bunch of great prizes for commuters who rideshare during Rideshare Week including a two night stay at the Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel. The more days you rideshare the greater your chances of winning…really Good for You! Oh, and by the way, our theme this year…you guessed it, Good for You!

The truth is, when you rideshare it’s good for everyone. So give it a try and sign up for the prizes at www.octa.net. For more details call us today at (949) 72-SHARE. How about one more time…Good for You!

Irvine Transportation Center
Parking Structure
submitted by Ali Taghavi from City of Irvine

The City of Irvine, in concert with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), continues to plan for the future of the Irvine Transportation Center (ITC).  A key part of planning involves physical improvements and strategies to accommodate the parking demand for the future.  Current efforts are underway to secure funding to construct a 1,500 space parking structure at the ITC.  If all goes according to plan, the new structure could be open within 18 to 24 months.  The design phase is already underway.  The concept plans call for the multi-level parking structure to be erected on a portion of the surface parking lot fronting Barranca Parkway.  Site planning considerations are being given to both convenient movement of people through the structure to the main station and platforms as well as to the overall pedestrian experience along the street frontage and adjacent properties and intersections.

To better accommodate current parking demand at the ITC, the City is investigating the possibility of providing angled, on-street parking on Ada between Barranca Parkway and Alton Parkway.   This on-street parking is an important step in the mitigation of the temporary loss of parking during construction of the parking structure.

These are exciting steps in the on-going evolution of the ITC.  Given the proximity of the ITC to the future Orange County Great Park and the ever  emerging Spectrum employment and entertainment centers, planning and development activities at the ITC are expected to continue for many years to come.  For more information on the ITC, please visit the City of Irvine’s website at www.ci.irvine.ca.us and click on the Irvine Transportation Center link or call (949) 724-7505.

Quick Fact:

A single person ridesharing one day each week for a year would save as much as 125 gallons of gas. At today's prices, that really adds up.
