Metrolink Board Proposes Fare Increase

In 2007, Metrolink's Board of Directors approved a three-year program of annual systemwide average fare adjustments of 3.5% that would take effect on July 1, 2007, 2008 and 2009 to keep pace with higher costs to operate commuter train service. Because of the escalating cost of diesel fuel, scheduled increases in costs for operating services contracts and new start-up costs related to the arrival of additional passenger cars in 2009, the Board is considering an additional systemwide average fare increase of up to 4.0% added to the previously approved 3.5% (for a maximum possible total systemwide fare increase of 7.5%) and potential reductions in service instead of the previously approved 3.5% to take effect on July 1, 2008.

You can comment about this proposal in several ways: Attend the public hearing, e-mail to MetrolinkFares@scrra.net, fax comments to (213) 452-0421, or mail comments to Metrolink Fares, 700 S. Flower Street, 26th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90017. The Metrolink Board of Directors will receive a compilation of all comments received and a public hearing will be held by the Board at its meeting on Friday, April 25, 2008, at 10:00am to be held at the Southern California Associated Governments (SCAG) San Bernardino Conference Room located at 818 W. 7th Street, 12th Floor, Los Angeles, California. Comments can also be submitted by using an online comment form at www.metrolinktrains.com.

Parking Structures Update

Parking relief is coming to the North Main Corona station. Construction of a 1,000 space parking structure began on January 4, 2008. The $25 million parking structure will be on the west portion of the existing parking lot, which will be closed for the 18 month long construction project. For Metrolink riders the best option for getting to the station during construction will be to use the free transit connections with Corona Cruiser and RTA. The La Sierra station 6 miles away also has additional parking capacity. An offsite parking lot is also available 1/2 mile away from the North Main Corona station at the old theater on Rincon Street with frequent shuttle service to the station. Commuters can look for a series of flyers and banners displayed at the station.

In addition, construction of the 1500 space parking structure in Irvine is well underway. In fact, the structure should be completed by September 2008!
